The modem/router combos are known to be lower quality. ie not as fast, lower range, etc. I definitely wouldn’t use it long term. But if you run an Ethernet cable from the lan port of the new modem to the lan port of the old one you should be able to use it. Reconnect the coaxial cable while the modem/router is rebooting.
